A quality battery is vital to maintaining the performance and reliability of any motorcycle, but especially late-model bikes equipped with electronic engine management and stability systems, navigation and infotainment systems, and LED lighting which all have specific voltage requirements. An absorbed glass mat (AGM) lead acid battery is featured as original equipment on all new Harley-Davidson® motorcycles and is a good choice when it’s time to replace your Harley-Davidson motorcycle battery. Let’s answer some FAQs about AGM motorcycle batteries.
All batteries work by converting chemical energy to electrical energy. A traditional flooded lead automotive or powersports battery contains lead plates divided by a series of separators. These plates and separators are suspended in liquid sulfuric acid that acts as an electrolyte. An AGM battery separates its lead plates with an absorbent fiberglass mat that holds electrolyte in a dry state rather than in a liquid as in a flooded battery.
When it’s time to replace your motorcycle battery, you may have a choice between an aftermarket flooded lead acid battery and an AGM battery. The AGM battery may be more expensive but will offer a number of benefits that may make it the better value for your motorcycle.
A Harley-Davidson® Lithium LiFe battery could be a better choice if the motorcycle is stored in a location where power for a maintenance charger is not available. When disconnected from the motorcycle, a Harley-Davidson Lithium LiFe battery will maintain its charge without maintenance for up to 12 months.
