Layered protection and versatility starts with our H-D Layering System Armored Base Layer. That’s because this is layer one in our 1-2-3 modular line that gives you interchangeable protection and style options for riding. This base is made from a rugged mix of nylon and spandex jersey with mesh panels to promote airflow while you ride. It’s fully supplied with superior breathability and shock absorption from D30 Ghost armor at the shoulders, elbows, chest, and back. With impact protection covered, block wind and cold by adding our Layering System Windproof Mid Layer (98126-23VM) or our Layering System Lightweight Mid Layer (98128-23VM). Finish with an abrasion-resistant outer layer from our H-D Layering System Trucker Riding Jacket (98124-23VM), H-D Layering System Bomber Riding Jacket (98125-23VM), H-D Layering System Café Racer Leather Jacket (98015-23VM), or H-D Layering System Captains Leather Jacket (98022-23VM).

It was a hot day, I was wearing it as an outer garment over a t-shirt. Its lightweight and very cool and comfortable. Unfortunately I as I approached an intersection, as I was stopped waiting to enter traffic, I was hit at slow speed by another biker from behind on a group ride. I hit the ground, landed on my shoulder, with absolutely no road rash ,and no injury. I picked some gravel out of the shoulder armor. The other biker was wearing a t shirt and had a good amount of road rash. So thankful I was wearing this. I know it is probably meant to be a under layer, but in the hot Florida sun, I do use it as an outer layer. It did its job. read more

I did not purchase the mid layer that was focused on blocking wind (will get later). How does the base layer fit? I have tried other lighter long sleeves with non D3O armor and it generally felt like i was hiding hard plates that were lacking flexibility at my joints (shoulder, elbow, back) which made being in rider position uncomfortable/cumbersome. The D3O armor changes that as they are thin and pliable (with their physics associated with hardening with sharp impact/force rather and when not exposed to such a force they are pliable). So the thin and light yet robust Layer 1 (armor base layer) was fantastic and contoured with my torso and arms as i rode without really adding weight. It is also able to be worn with any other jacket without adding much bulk. I questioned whether a Large would fit with a Large Mid and a Large outer jacket as part of the flex (would i look like a puffy winter jacket?). All 3 layers are designed to acommodate each other so a large for all did not change my comfort or bulk or flexibility while riding. It was too warm to wear the mid layer in May but it would be nice if the mid layer was both warm and wind proof to NOT have to have to different mid layers fighting against the same thing which is getting cold. The outer trucker was not a usual denim like jacket but had a coating that did not make it stiff (though it did make it shinier). It is absolutely comfortable and a new favorite riding jacket. I am including photos of the 3 separate layers along with them all together (not on my; but i am 5'10", 180lbs, normal build and Large for all three fit perfectly). read more
