Ormond Scenic Loop & Trail

Planning a trip to Daytona Bike Week next year? Make time to ride the Ormond Scenic Loop & Trail while you’re there.

Discover a bit of "Old Florida" along the Ormond Scenic Loop. Just north of Daytona Beach, the Loop is 34 miles of shaded, tree-canopied roadways, swamp and marshland, and takes in sights such as historic sugar mill ruins from 1825. Stop at Flagler Beach for a beachside lunch along the way.

Rolling down serene, tree-canopied two-lane roads, past wetlands and historic ruins, you’d scarcely believe you’re only minutes away from the hustle and bustle of Daytona Bike Week. Regular visitors to the annual motorcycle event know the Ormond Scenic Loop & Trail is one of the area’s best rides, a quick getaway from the madding crowds of Main Street.

RUM AND SUGAR CANE

Setting out from the Teddy Morse Daytona H-D dealership, you’ll head for Ormond Beach. Turn left on Granada Boulevard, then left onto N. Beach Street, and you’re there. You’ll run along the river for several miles, then turn inland as N. Beach Street becomes Old Dixie Highway. Running under a canopy of moss-draped oaks, keep your eyes open for a clearing off to the right where you’ll see the ruins of an old sugar mill and rum distillery. The mill was constructed around 1825 and burned in 1836 during the Second Seminole War. Today, all that remains are two chimneys, and parts of a brick and coquina stone wall.

AMONG ITS FLORA AND FAUNA, YOU’RE LIKELY TO SEE EGRETS, BLUE HERON, THE ENDANGERED FLORIDA SCRUB-JAY, AS WELL AS NESTING SEA TURTLES ON THE BEACH, AND MAYBE EVEN A DOLPHIN OR TWO.

MARSHES AND SPANISH MOSS

The 34-mile double loop around the barrier island and on the mainland side encompasses four state and six local parks. Moss-draped oaks, marshland, river, and beachfront views abound. Among its flora and fauna, you’re likely to see egrets, blue heron, the endangered Florida scrub-jay, as well as nesting sea turtles on the beach, and maybe even a dolphin or two. Next time you find yourself in Daytona Beach for Bike Week or Biketoberfest, be sure to check out the Ormond Scenic Loop & Trail for some peace and tranquility!
