    Game Changing Wind Reduction

I’d been riding with a relatively short Freedom Shield and while it did a great job blocking most of the wind from my chest and face, I was still getting an annoying amount of wind coming up from under and around the gas tank. I even tried swapping out the little adjustable wing things under the fairing with the larger ones that come standard on the Ultra but the increased wind reduction was minimal. So I decided to give the lowers a try and all I can say is…wow. Welcome to the Wind Goldilocks Zone. You can debate the aesthetics of these things to your heart’s content but there no denying their effectiveness. They let in just the right amount of wind: enough to make the ride much quieter and more comfortable but not so much that you feel like you traded in your bike for a beige OldsmoBuick. I happen to like the looks and I appreciate the additional storage they afford (though the latches don’t seem very robust…gonna have to remember to tread gently when opening and closing the storage compartments). The only reason I had to knock off a star was due to the instructions and quality control. These things come in three main pieces for each side, each of which looks like something from an Escher print: envisioning how they’re supposed to fit together is no easy gig. Even so, I feel the instructions could have done a better job illustrating how the pieces fit together. And have a beer or twelve ready when you go to fit the stinkin’ vent pin into the lever forks that move it (those installing these themselves will know what I’m referring to.) As for quality control, they leave a bit to be desired. There’s one hole on each side that just does NOT line up no matter how much jiggling and coaxing you employ. I ultimately gave up on the two bolts completely and am taking a leap of faith that the remaining four bolts will suffice. All that being said, I’m about as mechanically inclined as a doorknob and with a little patience even I was able to install these with a minimal increase in blood pressure. So if I can do it, so can you. A Torx 27 wrench with an extension or two and a torque wrench and you should be good to go. These really have been a game changer for me and I envision them allowing me to extend my riding season into the colder months as a result. But that’s just me, your mileage may vary. read more.
